Earth Hour

I just found out that tonight is Earth Hour, where we turn off our lights for one hour, starting at 8:30 pm, local time. I felt that it was a well-publicized thing last year, but the only reason I know about it this year is because I just saw this article on the Yahoo! home page.

Kind of cool to know that so many people around the world care and want to make a stand, at least for one hour. This one hour isn’t going to make a difference in the scheme of things, but if it gets us to start thinking then I think that makes it a success. I like the tips the article gives that we can each do to help conserve, so I’m going to give them here. Have fun in the dark tonight! We love it!

Turn off lights when you leave a room for 15 minutes or longer.
Drink tap water instead of bottled water.
Put your computer in power-save mode.
Turn off video game consoles when not in use.
Seal air leaks, adjust your water heater, and control your thermostat to lower energy usage and waste.
Go meatless on Mondays.
Watch out for energy vampires around the house and unplug the biggies.
Swap out all your light bulbs for CFLs.
Stop catalogs and junk mail from piling up in your mailbox.
Reduce the brightness of your TV set to the “home” mode.
Use up leftovers, compost, and avoid wasting food.
Find out how walkable your hometown is and try walking to your weekend errands.
Fix a leaky faucet or toilet.
Use the low-water and low-heat settings on your dishwasher, and don’t pre-rinse dishes.
Hang your clothes to dry on a clothesline in spring and summer.
Take public transit to work or school.
Install dimmer switches on your lights and plug appliances into smart power switches

  1. At 5:00 this afternoon I was so ready for Earth Hour. By the time 8:30 rolled around I had completely forgotten about it, as had everyone else in the house. Last year we observed Earth Hour. I feel bad (well, stupid really) to have missed it this year.
